Formed in 1983, the Virginia Wineries Association (VWA) grew out of the desire by owners of Virginia wineries to create a wine community that shared ideas and resources to the benefit of everyone in the Virginia wine industry. As a non-profit trade organization, the VWA advocates on behalf of the industry in a number of areas.
A thriving wine industry is a growing one, so the VWA favors the industry's continued expansion statewide.
The formal Mission as stated in the By Laws is “to actively encourage and support the production, quality, promotion, and appreciation of Virginia Wines”.
VWA President Ann Heidig sums up the association mission this way. "The VWA strives to be the voice of the Virginia wine industry, the go-to-resource, the representative of wine enrichment, the focal point within the industry for local, state and national issues as we work to establish our identity and our marketing."
VWA is made up of both Farm Wineries and other organizations or individuals with interest in the wine industry, referred to as Associated Members. It is governed currently by a Board of 12 with 5 active committees.
